If you are thinking of a career in aviation (whether part time or full time) you will need to obtain the CPL.
This allows you to receive remuneration for pleasure and charter flying. If you are thinking of becoming a helicopter Instructor, then a CPL(H) must be obtained before instructor course can commence.

At Rotorflight we get regular questions about what is involved in obtaining a commercial pilots licence and what it ‘s privileges are. So this page outlines the ‘Modular’ approach which is probably the route most PPL’s would take. For all the CPL options, please contact us and we can advise accordingly.

JAR-FCL CPL (H) GENERAL INFORMATION

At Rotorflight we get regular questions about what is involved in obtaining a commercial pilots licence and what it ‘s privileges are. Minimum Age

An applicant for a JAR-FCL CPL (H) shall be at least 18 years of age.

Licence Validity

The JAR-FCL CPL (H) will be issued for a maximum period of 5 years.

JAR-FCL CPL (H) Courses

A JAR-FCL CPL (H) may be obtained by completing an approved Integrated Course or approved Modular Course of training.

Integrated Courses

The Integrated Course is a full time course of ground and flying training run by a Flying Training Organisation (FTO) approved to conduct such courses. There are two Integrated Courses available:

Commercial Pilot Licence (Helicopter) Integrated Course

The aim of this course is to train pilots to the level of proficiency necessary for the issue of a CPL (H) but not the Instrument Rating or any further specialisation (e.g. aerial work activities). The course shall last between 9 and 24 months.

This course consists of a minimum of 135 hours of flying training and 550 hours (reduced to 500 hours for PPL (H) holders) of theoretical knowledge instruction.

Airline Transport Pilot (Helicopters) Integrated Course

The aim of this course is to train pilots to the level of proficiency necessary to enable them to operate as co-pilot on multi-pilot, multi-engine helicopters in commercial air transportation and to obtain the CPL (H)/IR but not any further specification (e.g. aerial work activities). The course shall last between 12 and 36 months.

The course consists of a minimum of 195 hours of flying training and 750 hours of theoretical knowledge instruction. The course also includes training in multi-crew co-operation for the operation of multi-pilot helicopters.

CPL (H) Modular Course

The aim of this course is to train CPL (H) holders to the level of proficiency necessary for the issue of a CPL(H) but not the instrument rating or any further specialisation (e.g. aerial work activities).
This course is designed for applicants who do not wish to undertake a full time course of integrated training or who wish to stagger their training by completing approved ‘modules’ of approved training over a period of time ie. Instrument rating course, Multi-Crew Co-operation Course (MCC), ATPL theoretical knowledge instruction etc.

The course consists of a minimum of 30 hours of flying training and 500 hours of theoretical knowledge, for CPL(H) and 650 hours theoretical knowledge instruction for ATPL (H).

JAR-FCL CPL(H) MODULAR COURSE TRAINING /EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

Training/Experience Requirements

Holders of a PPL(H) with the minimum flying experience detailed below, may commence an Approved JAR CPL(H) Modular Course of training:

• 155 hours flight time as pilot of helicopters, including 50 hours as PIC of helicopters; or

• 135 hours as pilot of helicopters if holder of a PPL(A), including 30 hours as PIC of helicopters; or

• 105 hours as pilot of helicopters if holder of a CPL(A).

The Modular Course consists of 30 hours dual instruction time, up to 20 hours visual instruction may include 5 hours in a helicopter FNPT 1 , 2 or FS, and 10 hours instrument instruction, which may include 5 hours in at least an aeroplane FNPT 1 or helicopter FNPT 1 or an aeroplane. Flying completed on the course may be counted towards meeting and flying experience requirements for licence issue as detailed below.

• Applicants without a night qualification (Helicopter) shall additionally complete a minimum of 5 hours night flight instruction.

• Applicants with a valid non-JAA CPL(H) may have the training reduced at the discretion of the Authority on the basis of a recommendation from the FTO.

An applicant for a JAR-FCL CPL(H) must have completed a minimum of 185 hours of flight time. This must include the particular requirements specified in a, b and c below as pilot of helicopters:-

a) 50 hours as Pilot-in-Command, or 35 hours as Pilot-in-Command if completed during a course of integrated flying training;

10 hours of cross-country flight time as Pilot-in-Command, including a cross-country flight totalling at least 185 km (100 nm) in the course of which full-stop landing at two aerodromes different from the aerodromes of departure shall be made.

b) 10 hours of instrument dual instruction time (for applicants within an IR), of which not more than 5 hours is to be instrument ground time (in a FNPT 1, 2 or Flight Simulator).

c) 5 hours Night flying (for applicants without PPL(H) NQ) comprising of at least 3 hours of dual instruction, including at least 1 hour of cross-country navigation, and 5 solo take-offs and full-stop landings, each to include one circuit.

Refer to LASORS for all the combinations of options and requirements on these various integrated courses as they are too detailed to be listed here.

CPL(H) MODULAR AND CPL(H) INTEGRATED COURSES

An applicant from either course must pass the nine CPL(H) Theoretical Knowledge examinations in the following subjects:

Air Law
Aircraft General Knowledge
Flight Performance and Planning
Human Performance and Limitation
Meteorology
Navigation
Operational Procedures
Principles of Flight
Communications (VFR)

ATPL(H) INTEGRATED COURSE

An applicant from this course must pass the fourteen ATPL(H) Theoretical Knowledge examinations in the following subjects:

Air Law
Aircraft General Knowledge (2 papers)
Flight Performance and Planning (3 papers)
Human Performance and Limitation
Meteorology
Navigation (2 papers)
Operational Procedures
Principles of Flight
Communications (2 papers).
